Chapter Ten

“SO, EVERYTHING’S FINE, right?” Mac asked, watching as Penvo ran his palms over Teevar. “Right? He’s properly fixed? Cured?”

“Cured,” Penvo confirmed, slowly lowering his arms. “Miracle.”

“Really?” Mac flashed Teevar a grin. “Those gods of yours are watching over you.”

Penvo moved to pick up his bag, but Mac snatched it up before he could reach it and handed it over. “You’ll be heading home now?”

“Yes,” Penvo agreed. “Home.”

“Not a big talker,” Mac said. He winked at Teevar and then ushered Penvo from the room and out to where Ral and Lenara were waiting. “We’ve got the all clear,” he said. “You can take the doc home.”

“We will be leaving as soon as we return,” Lenara said, heading down the stairs before Penvo and turning back to watch he came down safely with Ral taking up the rear. “Keep the engine running. I cannot return to the heat.”

“Got it, boss.” Mac waited until he’d seen them leave before he returned to Teevar in the medical bay. He was surprised to see him standing. “Should you be up?”

“I’m hungry.” Teevar selected a piece of food from the tray. “And I’m sick of lying down.”

Mac joined him and slipped an arm around his waist. “I’ll fetch us something fresh.”

“Mac? I’m sick of running.”

Mac turned back. “We’re not going to get caught, and we don’t have the money to pay the bounty hunters anymore. We have to keep run—” He looked at Teevar. “My pin. I dropped it when the kovans first took me. If I could get it back, it could get us to Earth. I know it could.”

Teevar smiled. “Then we go and get your pin.”

“That easy?”

“I will take my chance with anything after what I’ve been through.”

Mac nodded. “You can help me convince Lenara then.” He grinned and then left to get them some more food.
